Question:

Help with Alabama homeschooling laws?

It says that I must enroll in a "church school" if I want to be homeschooled. Can't I just send a note to the superintendent saying that I'm going to be homeschooled by my mom and just be homeschooled by my mom? Do I HAVE to enroll in a church school? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of being homeschooled? If I do enroll in a church school, can I be taught at home by my mom?

  1. It says you can either enroll in or ESTABLISH a church school. I would assume that this means you're establishing the equivelent of a private school in your own home, so all you'd have to do is file the appropriate notice to the school district and inform them of this.

Go to HSLDA.org and click on homeschool laws under the homeschooling option. Click on your state and read your options.

If you do enroll in a "church school", it's basically the same as an umbrella school (or private school that oversees homeschoolers). You do all yoru work at home as a home schooler, but the work you do, the tests, due dates, curriculum, etc is determined by the umbrella school. No, your mother needs no certification. She just needs to keep records and help you where you need it.

Look at that website, and call your local school district for more details and clerification.

  2. I'm not familiar with the laws in Alabama, but in Virginia i used to have friends (they were sisters) who were homeschooled by their mom and she had to be certified.

  3. I am not familiar with Alabama law, but I do know that many "church schools" are simply umbrella schools that you pay as a "covering" for homeschooling.  You send in certain paperwork, perhaps a transcript or portfolio to them, yet you still homeschool.  You need to find your state homeschooling organization to see what is available for you as an umbrella school.
