Question:

Help with Algae in the fish tank?

There is algae on the sides of my fish tank, it is a 10 gal, and I've tried snails, they help, but don't solve it. I'm afraid of using chemicals because I have the snails, and the chemicals say that they will kill them and my plants. I'm also worried about them hurting my guppy fry. Is there a good, SAFE, way to kill just the algae?

  1. you can get these magnetic scrubs, that allow you to move a magnet on the outside which drags the other on the inside to clean - works better than paper towel and can get at most aquariums.

  2. algae scrubbers for about $4-$10. they have magnetic, sponges, and other kinds too. u can also try a pleco but thats for less algae. if you have too much, your best bet is the scrubbers.

  3. I'd go with a scrubber (specified for your tank a material-ie:glass or acrylic). Live plants can help also. They add more upkeep, but make the algae compete for nutrients, etc. The chemicals are OK, but not good, especially in warm weather. They pretty much just deplete the oxygen in the tank, which can be dangerous for anything else in it. You could try a pleco, but I'd be a little concerned about your fry unless they're in a net. Also, try to get a smaller species like a rubber-lipped pleco, the other guys get huge. I've got one now sitting at a little over 2 feet long. Good luck! ^_^

  4. I would stick with the algae scrubber as well but I have been told there is a way you can use phosphate and a sort of net to take what causes algae right out of the water in your tank

  5. when i get algae on my aquariums.. i just get a rag and wipe it all off

  6. get 1 or 2 plecostamuses
