I can't for my life figure out how to get this into an equation- I don't need help solving it once it's in the form of a/n equation(s):

Sauder has three times as much money as Sony. Sammy has $4 less than Sauder and $5 more than Sony. How much money does each have.

Any help would be more than appreciated.

  1. sauder = a

    sony=b

    sammy=c

    ..Sauder has three times as much money as Sony..so the first equation is A=3b

    Sammy has $4 less than Sauder c+4=a

    Sammy has $5 more than Sony b+5=c

    ..By what we have so far We know that 3b=c+4

    b = c-5 also so substitute b into the above equation we have 3(c-5)=c+4.....that's 3c-15=c+4....c=$9.5

    ...if c= 9.5 then a=9.5+4=$13.5

    then b=9.5-5=$4.5

    so Sauder has $13.5

    Sony has $4.5

    and Sammy has $9.5

    I know it's messy but hope you understand

  2. Let x = Sauders money, y = Sony's z = Sammy's

    x = 3y

    z = x-4

    z = y + 5

    I imagine you got this far so I'll take you further...

    x-4 = y + 5

    You can substitue for x now so you only have y in the equation. form there is it just solving for y then finding the other two.

    Care to return the favor?
