1. Which line is the flattest (or is less steep)? Why?

1. y = 5x -6

2. y = 5x 6

3. y = x - 3

4. y = x 3

2. The line y = 4x - 7 crosses the y axis at:

1. (4, 0)

2. (0, 4)

3. (-7, 0)

4. (0, -7)

3. You are sliding a big cabinet down a truck ramp for a customer. You must maintain control of the cabinet because it is very heavy. There are 2 ramps in the building.

The equation of ramp 1 is y = 2x 7 and the equation of ramp 2 is y = 3 x 7. Which is the safest ramp to slide the cabinet down without losing control and why?

4. Write the equation of a line whose slope is 6 and whose y intercept is -3.

5. Find the x and y intercepts of each linear equation. Be sure to write your answers as ordered pairs.

1. y = 3x - 6

2. 6y = -x 2

6. What happens to the graph of the line y = 3x -2 when the equation is changed to y = 3x 6?

7. What happens to the graph of the line y = 2x - 5 when the equation is changed to y = 5x 6?

  1. Okay:

    i) pick an absolute minimum of 3 random values for x,

    ii) substitute for x in equation,

    iii) solve equations (I'm presuming you know how to do that!),

    iv) get some graph paper,

    v) plot x & y-values (in the form of co-ordinates) from equations solved at iii),

    vi) join dots to form graph,

    vii) read off answers,

    viii) repeat i - viii for next question.

    So, for instance, if one looks at the first question: y=5x-6

    if x=-1, y= -11;

    if x=0, y= -6;

    if x=1, y= -1;

    and so on and so on.

    That gives you the co-ordinates (i.e. x value, y value):

    -1, -11;

    0, -6;

    1, -1;

    You just need to plot the co-ordinates on the graph and join them together (& extend if neccessary) to form the slope/curve of your graph. You can then easily see which of the proffered equations gives you the steepest (or not) slope etc.
