I am going to buy a tank and betta fish today. What size tank should I get? Food recommendations? I am looking up stuff on line, but figured I would ask here. Any other help on Betta fish would help too.

  1. I had just a bowl from the pet store I got my fish from, I added some rocks in the bottom and a fake plant, filled it with water and added the water conditioning drops to get the water livable for the fish and added him in! He lived for about 3 years (they only live for about 1.5 years) and he seemed to be great! I can't remember what the name of the food was I fed him, but it was about $3/jar and lasted for about 2-3 months.

  2. Buy a 5 gallon at wal mart. Since its a small tank let it do a cycle (not fish just filter and water)Make sure yyour filter has a lowwww water flow or your betta will not be able to swim due to the string current. Leave the filter on so it can build up good bacteria. Then go get your betta fish with a heater and gravel and a live plant or fake plants. Buy your betta fish freeze dried blood worms. Fedd him about 3 once a day or every other day.OR you could by regular betta pellets. Feed them 3-4 once a day or every other day. If you feed your betta too much it will become constipated or bloated!

    Hope this helped!

  3. anything over 2.5 gallons with a large surface area is good

also get a heater and a small filter is a great idea

my betta absolutely LOVES Nutrafin Max Colour Enhancing Betta flake Food

I also supplement his diet with blood worms

  4. you can get a 1 gallon tank for a betta. bettas dont do much.

  5. you can keep it in a bowl but a 10 gallon tank and up is best also you need a heater

Bettas come right after goldfish as the most common fish pet and they live up to 1 to 2 years even 3

  6. you can only have one male per tank as they will fight 10 galls should b adequate if the room temp is around 70 u don't really need a heater but if its cold where you keep them id recommend it ask at the pet shop as u can buy colour enhancing food don't know if it works only just started to feed it to mine good luck PS no matter which male you buy you will undoubtedly see another you like as well happy fishing

  7. setup your tank and let it run for a week, then get a betta.

  8. The absolute minimum size would be a 2 1/2 gallon.  5 gallon would be better.  If you want to have a community tank with the Betta in it, you can get a 10 gallon.

You'll have to change the water once a week or so.  You'll also need a heater, and you could consider getting a filter too, it will make cleaning easier on you if you do get one.

I like Hikari or Attison's Betta pellets for food.

When you get plants, go either live or silk.  Plastic can slice up a Betta's fins.  And make sure you pick up some water conditioner too, aquasafe and prime are both good brands.

  9. Betta fish are native to Thailand and live in paddy Fields or waters with low oxygen rich waters, such as slow flowing streams.

tanks take around 2-3 months for natural bacteria to grow. This is important as the levels of nitrate ,nitrite and ammonia will be un healthy for the fish, it "will" lead to fish death.

starting a new aquarium is a very steep and expensive learning curve if you do it in-correctly.

try badman's forum, he really knows his stuff, good luck male siamese fighting fish (Betta's) are beautiful.

if you need more info because i haven't answered all you wanted pls e-mail me.

  10. Don't get your betta yet. Hikari betta food is good, but more expensive. Their is alot of ones you can get. Just make sure you read the food labels and see if it is designed to not cloud up your water. You will be much happier with this. Get at least a 5 gallon. Let your tank sit with water in it and the filter running for 1 week. Then your betta will be much happier or else if you don't your betta will probably get sick. Hope this helps  email me if you have more questions.
