I am bird sitting two baby just weaned Rosella's. They got spooked in their cage and were flying all around and I noticed a blood filled tail feather on the bottom of the cage. I checked both birds and can't tell which bird or where it came from. There also is no blood on the cage floor or their perch. Should I be worried? What would I do anyway?

  1. Hi, i wouldnt worry yoursekf over it. I own a lovebird at home and work with a lot of birds at school and its normal for there to be blood running through a new feather. if if the feather shaft is what it is bleeding this is normal and just means that a good supply of blood is being passed to help the new feather come in. make sure that the bird is ok and there is no other broken feathers on the bird. i really couldn't tell u exactly what happened but if this ever happens again you should invest in needle nose plier to help pull the broken blood feather out without causing any bleeding.

p.s be very careful when handling birds with new feathers. new feathers will have a dark line running through the shaft(blood is running through it) and completely grown in feathers will have no dark line they will be white and clear. this is a good indicator especially if the birds wings are going o be trimmed soon:) i hope this helps and if u need nay more help please feel free to contact me:)

  2. Well if neither one is bleeding then they should be fine.

  3. sometimes when you go get bird feathers clipped they clip to low and hit a blood vein in the feather that what probally happed either it got stuck on something and fell or the other one did it.but you shouldnt be worried the birds will be ok.

  4. As long as the full feather is there (quill, shaft, all of it), the bird should be fine. If not, the rest of the feather is still on the bird and needs to be pulled out. Go to an avian vet if need be.

The bird will probably be fine, though. Just watch them for a while and make sure they aren't bleeding. If they are, you can use cornstarch on a Q-tip to stop the flow.

    Good Luck!
