  1. If I understand what you're asking, you are asking how to apply the proverb to an experience you don't yet have.

Instead, try applying it to experiences you can imagine for yourself.  Don't try to apply it to someone else.  Don't try to imagine a new situation for yourself.  Think about a past time when you trained in something you cared nothing about applying to your own life...(perhaps this class...).  Did it do you any good?

Realize, you need a framework and world view from which to make correct judgements and decisions.  So, trying to think without having this is dangerous because you will inevitably be blind-sided.

That is just the meaning.  Make it more specifically applicable to your own experience.  What did YOU learn and lose?  What problem, subject or skill have YOU tried to think about without first getting a framework for understanding it?

I don't know if this helps, but perhaps it will shed some light.  Good luck!

  3. part 1 learning as in acquiring only information or data is useless if there is no critical thinking, internalization and meta cognition throughout the learning experience. There is no Knowledge, comprehension or application, the first 3 stages of critical thinking in blooms taxonomy.

part 2  if you don't learn anything during your own thinking process about a certain topic. No Analysis, synthesis and evaluation of your own thoughts (last 3 stages) no critical thinking at all. I hope it helps. Elaborate on that it is just something to start with.
