Question:

Help with Cleveland Golf Wedges - Do I really need all the degrees?

Trying to add a couple of wedges to my set and decided on Cleveland CG-14s. Only issue is there are various clubs between 48-60 degrees. While I'd love to own all, I'd like to start with 2 good wedges then add as I need to.

Main areas I need help are to get close to hole from about 40-50ft out and also from the bunker.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

  1. Determine what degree of your current PW.  Clubs are normally staggered 4 degrees.  I find the game easier when I have a full shot into the green versus a touch shot.  I play a GW (51 degrees) and a low bounce SW (56 degrees).  The low bounce wedge is a little flatter, so I can open up the face to approx 58 degrees if necessary.  That is really rare.

Believe it or not, a LW (58 or 60 degree) requires a little bit of skill to hit consistently in all conditions.  It will magnify your faults if you are not a solid ball striker.  In reality, a LW is truly only needed once or twice a round.  With a GW, you will use it more on the 80 - 110 yard approach shot.

    Good Luck.

  2. I carried 4 wedges for a long time then changed over to 3. 48(standard pw) 54 and 60. I find the 54 to be great. That's my recommendation. Cleveland has my favorite lob wedge, the gunmetal 588.....old school.

  3. I (and most others) carry a sand wedge and a lob wedge.  SW is usually either 54° or 56° and the lob is either 58° or 60°.  I carry 54 and 60.  I really think that is all you need.  The only other thing you might want would be a gap wedge around 51 or 52°, but I just hit a half SW to get that distance.

So I would suggest a SW and a LW, I think 54 and 60 gives you the best yardage gaps.

  4. Unless you are a sscratch golfer .... the differnece between 52, 54, 56, 58 & 60 degrees wedges is minimal.

Probably hurt your game more - thinking what club to play.

I suggest buying the 52 and 60 ... and getting to know how far you can play these from and what different angles you can use with them.

There are other clubs to fill your bag with that make a bigger and better difference.

  5. 54 and a 60 is all you need, use half and three quarter shots and you have six distances you can control.

  6. A 60 degree wedge is needed if you are a good golfer;  its a lob wedge for under 50 yds when the main thing is getting up FAST.    If you already have a SW (usually 54 or 56 degrees), then you may wanna look at a 52 in addition to the 60.

  7. if your lookin to add 2 wedges.. go with a 52 degree and a 58 degree... the 58 will be good out of the sand and the 52 will act like more of a pitching wedge so you can use is around the green like you want to... have you tried the titleist vokey wedges??? i like those the best! good luck my man
