Question:

Help with DVD drive problems?

I have a computer with a generic DVD drive, windows 98 and no internet. I recently replaced the cd drive with the DVD one but windows is not picking it up as a DVD drive. In my computers, it says that its a CD rom drive, but it won't even play CDs. Any help would be appreciated!

  1. the problem may be either with the drive itself, or with the ide bus it's attached to. the drive's ability to read disc's is independent of the OS's recognition of this. one posibility is that in the config.sys file there is a cdrom driver loading that is causing trouble with the new drive. check the config.sys file by running msconfig from the RUN command. uncheck any item that says something like device=c:\cdrom\cdromdrv.sys /d:mscd001

then restart your pc to see if the problem goes away. you can always recheck the line if you think you need it later.
