Help with Gimp?

Got Gimp, yet have can't get the effects I want. I can't get much of anything, actually. I've heard great things about it, but so far it hasn't delivered. I hope it's just my inexperience.

How does one get an antique-y effect like this:

I haven't got two nickels to rub together, so Gimp's all I got--I've all ready done the Photoshop free trial too. Any help?

It's much appreciated.

  1. you may want to play with controls with any image to learn , and there are tutorials online, there is the help file to download 50mb,

the images shown could be done with camera prior to editing,

some of the antique effects can be adding with coloured layer over image, try creating a new layer, applying sepia yellow/tan color with paint bucket, , then adjust mode overlay in layer toolbox, , you can also adjust color hue/saturation slightly, check levels and curves if needed, and sometimes channels allow filtering of rgb colors,

reminder to use copies of originals, save file as xcf for later use, save as copy for jpg,
