The molecular formula for DEET is C12H17NO

How many grams of carbon can be obtained from 127g of DEET?

how do i do this? I think i use stoichiometry?

  1. Yeah you need to find the reaction equation for this first. Then after stoichiometry compare moles.

    1. Equation

    2. Find the amount of moles deet you have

    3. After stoichiometry figure out how many moles Carbon you can extract

    4. Multiply that by 12 (for 12 grams/mol)

    Therefore the number of moles of DEET you have is 127/187 = .679 moles about.

    New idea, actually.  Find the % composition of Carbon.  Carbon takes 144/187 grams which is 77%.  So it would make sense that Carbon makes up 77% of DEET.  So, you have 127 grams of DEET, you have .77 times 127 grams of Carbon =
