Question:

Help with Hungarian ancestry?

Oh my goodness I'm having so much difficulty searching for my Hungarian and German ancestors who came over in the mid-late 1800's.

But I was wondering if anyone else knows of any good sites to find Hungarian records i.e. military, birth, marriage and death. I'm at a loss, my Hungarian great grandparents who came over to America didn't talk about their family over in Hungary for different reasons. A specific record I'd love to find is that of my Great Grandfather who went back over to Hungary around that time WWI started and he had to join the Hungarian military since he wasn't a complete U.S. citizen yet, he was with the soldiers who used horses.

Any help? Thanks for any tips.

  1. Many Hungarian records up to 1895  are available on microfilm at Family History Centers. Go to Familyserach.org to see what records are available on microfilm and to locate your closest library.

There are sites for specific towns and various Hungarian organizations may have some indexed records, but I do not know of any sites online that are all-inclusive.

Also -- be certain that the town your ancestors are from is *still in* Hungary. Boarders have changed a lot in that area since the 1800s.

  2. Hi Ashton,

This site is for people just beginning to look into their Hungarian ancestry:

    http://user.itl.net/~glen/Hungarianbegin...

I'd suggest you start your actual research with CyndisList.com, I did a search there for "Hungary" and found these pages where they list sites which will be helpful to you in your Hungarian research:

    www.cyndislist.com/austria.htm

    www.cyndislist.com/czech.htm

    www.cyndislist.com/baltic.htm

    www.cyndislist.com/easteuro.htm

Also, if you're looking for military records for upper Hungary/Slovakia, I found this site:

    http://www.iabsi.com/gen/public/military...

And finally, you might consider reading what's on this forum site, and posting questions of your own:  http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.Milita...

I hope this helps, best of luck to you!
