Question:

Help with Linksys Wireless router / network problem?

I have a Linksys router and have had it for a couple of months. My sister has the main computer hooked up to it, but I've always been able to run my laptop from my room on it as well. I was on it this morning and it was working as well as it has for 2 months...then all of a sudden I got dropped. My wireless card is a USB card, but other things are plugging into the USB and working. The message I get is that my connection has limited or no connectivity...because the network is not assigning me an IP. But it's been working fine! My sister's computer is still working fine. Any ideas?

  1. If your router is assigning IP addresses, make sure you are set up for automatic IP.  To do this go to network connections, under the general tab go to internet protocol and click properties.  Make sure Obtain IP address automatically is check.  If your router is not set up to deliver ip address, (I set mine this way for extra security) you have to assign an IP address to your computer.

PS.  If you have more than one router set up, you will have to change one of those router IP addresses or they will conflict, which will cause all sort of problems.  This can be done under the routers menu.

  2. The routers not the problem as the other computer is connecting. Try reconnecting to network, try uninstall and reinstall usb drivers and device, try card on different computer.

  3. Remove the wireless connection, and manually create a new one.

  4. ah the good ole limited or no connectivity

try rebooting the router, then rebooting the pc, then hard reseting the router

if none of that works, try another wifi card (if applicable) if that doesn't work then try removing the drivers of the wifi card, rebooting and then reinstalling the wifi drivers...

if that doesn't work then either reformat, or buy a new wifi card and cross your fingers...

btw a good test would be to see if other wifi computers can actually connect to your router....also check to see if your computer can connect to another router

  5. Un-plug it and plug it back in

  6. It is tough to tell without knowing how you have your router setup; however, here are some things to try or find out:

    1. Have you tried power-cycling the router? Unplug the router and plug it back in after about 30 seconds.

    2. Has the address of the router changed at all? For instance, has it been changed from 192.168.0.1 to something like 192.168.1.1 or vice versa?

    3. Has the pass-key been changed on the router?
