Hi I would so appreciate any help you can give me. I just downloaded Microsoft Home and Student onto my computer. It is working great if I open it up directly, but if I try to open up an attachement in an email, or a link that is supposed to open up in Word it won't open. I have windows Vista can anybody help me? I am starting online classes this week and need to have it working properly.

  1. You may have to actually download the doc to your computer from the net first before trying to open it. It happens more often than not from certain schools (Kaplan, etc).

  2. This could either be the general file associations in the operating system, or the open-with assignments in your email client or browser.

Try this.  If you can double-click on a Word document on your machine and it opens in Word, the problem lies in the email client or browser.  Since there are so many of them, it's hard to give exact instructions on how to fix that problem.

But if the file won't open in Word either, here's the solution (at least part way):

    1. Right-click on one of those Word documents and select Open With.

    2. Find Word in the list of recommended programs.

    3. Select it.

    4. Check the box marked Always use the selected program to open files of this type.

    5. Click OK.

That should clear up at least part of your problem.  Note that not all browsers and email clients use this list.  Mozilla Thunderbird, for instance, has its own list.

    Hope that helps.
