Question:

Help with Parallel Parking!!!?

Ok, I got the whole idea of the alligning yoru car parallel to the other car, but in the test, wouldn't they be using cones?

What would the cone indicate?

Would the top cone indicate the "back of the car" or the "front of the car"

And when I'm doing reversing in parallel parking, do I have to put my right hand behind the passenger seat or is that not necessary?

During the procedure of parallel parking, do I have to check blind spots when I'm taking the test, as if it was in a "real life scenario" ?

I understand you turn 45 degrees reverse till your passenger window is alligned with the "cone" after that, do I turn appropartiatly towards the parking spot or do i have to keep the wheels straight, back up, and then turn? (which is the way I did with my driver's ed teacher)

Yeah, if you guys can answer my questions only, then I think i'll be safe. Please do not go off topic and recommending me websites and stuff, unless they are REALLLY USEFUL.

Thanks, test tomorrow =\

  1. do everything as if were real idk where ur taking the test if its in the street  or a parking lot with cones but you need to move your head and everything i failed b/c the guy from dmv said i dont check my mirrors but i did i just didnt move my head. your arm behind the headrest is crucial. put your arm look back and use your rearview mirror while parking. the cones are the other car the front two are the front and the back two are the back which you cannot touch or youll fail youll also fail if your too far away from the curb good luck

  2. Cones or another car depends on the driving course.  The cones, if used should indicate the parked vehicle(s) you are parking near.  Do not put your hand behind the passenger seat.  That is just stuff used in movies.  You are required to keep both hands on the steering wheel unless doing something else such as signaling, shifting, etc and watch around you both with the mirrors and turning to look.  Do as  your driving instructor taught you for backing.  You need to get the vehicle back into the space before you bring the front end over in line with the curb.  Spend a little time practicing this before you take the test and you should do fine.

  3. The cones just outline the area that you're supposed to fit into . They're used because drivers hit them and they bounce right back . Use the cones as reference points - when you see this cone there in my field of view, the back or front of my vehicle should be here.

When backing for this portion of the road test, you'll have to turn and look back . Go ahead and put your right hand behind the seat next to you for support . You'll need to look back and check that right rear mirror (make sure its adjusted properly - tilted down a little to see the pavement and inwards to see the right rear corner of your vehicle).

The secret to parallel parking is the start and the size of the space . The space should be at least 1-1/2 times the length of your vehicle. (If you try to put a 15 ft SUV into a 20 ft space, you won't make it.) . Use a small vehicle if you can . When you start, you want to be even with and about 2 ft away from the "vehicle" in front of the space you want to get into . As you start back, turn the wheel to the right as you start to pass the back bumper of the vehicle next to you . Then aim the right rear corner of your vehicle at a point about 3-4 feet in front of the "vehicle" behind you . As the front of your vehicle clears the 'vehicle' in front, start turning the wheel to the left to straighten out . You should be in just about perfect position - no more than 18 inches from the 'curb' in just about the middle of the space . Hopefully, you can practice this before trying it on the test.

Take your time and all the best.

  4. Yes they will be using the cones..........

The cones represent the front and the rear of the other cars.

Dont take your hands off the wheel, use your mirrors.

Press your turn signal as you approach a parallel parking spot. The parking space must be 6 feet longer than your car. Pull up so the back of your car is even with the front edge of the parking space. Stay close to the car at your side.

Turn the steering wheel toward the curb. One full turn of the wheel is the right amount to put your rear wheels in the correct position. Put your car in reverse and ease backward, allowing your car to straighten out as it goes back.

Continue to go backwards until you almost touch the curb with your rear wheel. Put your car in drive and turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction.

Pull forward to straighten out your car and angle it away from the curb. Keep an eye on the car in front of you and the one behind you to be sure you do not hit either one.

Pull forward and backward as needed to center the car in the space.
