Help with Ram to purchase?

Hi i have 1gb ddr2 ram i know my pc is compatible with ddr2 and i have 3 more slots available, can i buy any ddr2 type ram does the speed of the ram have an effect on the type of mother board or you can buy any fast speed ddr2 ram that can fit into pc? Im asking this because of bestbuy's sale and i need ram so i saw this K-Byte 2GB DDR2 667MHz PC-5300 Memory for only $39.99

  1. Not all computers can handle 2GB sticks. Go here and click on "scan my system" to see what speed ram youre running now and what your upgrade options are:

    If the ram you have now is faster than the ram you are thinking about buying go with ram the speed of what you already have because ram only runs at the speed of the slowest ram installed.

    As far as someone mentioning dual channel I assume that, since you said you have 3 free ram slots that you are only running one stick of ram now. If you do have a dual channel rig then you're running in single channel mode now and adding another 1GB stick would then make it dual channel. Just be sure to add it to the other channel.


  2. To gain best performance, you should be using 2 sticks of same memory to run them in dual-channel mode, having 3GB non dual-channel may be slightly faster than 2GB of dual-channel due to Windows could use more, but really they should go in pairs
