  1. A good SAE project for you no matter where you live would be Vermiculture or earthworm compost processing. I think it would fit under the SAE guidelines as Compost Processing and/or Specialty Animal Production.

Recycling the organic waste of a household into compost allows us to return badly needed organic matter to the soil. In this way, we participate in nature's cycle, and cut down on garbage going into burgeoning landfills.

Why Compost With Worms? Worm composting is a method for recycling food waste into a rich, dark, earth-smelling soil conditioner. The great advantage of worm composting is that this can be done indoors and outdoors, thus allowing year round composting. It also provides apartment dwellers with a means of composting. In a nutshell, worm compost is made in a container filled with moistened bedding and red worms. Add your food waste for a period of time, and the worms and micro-organisms will eventually convert the entire contents into rich compost.

You can make your project as small as composting your household garbage or as large as you want with animal manure, lawn clippings, raked leaves, and any organic waste you may need to dispose of.

If the great compost is not enough of a reward for you, you may be able to make a little cash by selling earthworms as fishing bait or to others wanting to start composting.  If you go on a larger scale you'll even find a good market for organic compost.  Good Luck.

Here are a couple of web sites to read to get started.

  2. Hey! First question do you live on a farm or in town? There is such a wide variety of SAEs. Go look on the FFA website and look at the SAE tab there should be a list of things!  You could do anything from working at a place as a placement SAE or become an entrepreneur.  I did catch a calf program and started my own herd with my uncle out of town.  I also worked for the extension agency as a secretary in the summers, and cooked at a local deli as food prep placement.

  3. That's a bit vague, what're your resources and are your advisers pretty liberal about what they think an SAE is, mine don't care if i put down hours for feeding, mowing the lawn, changing oil, putting up drywall, or mixing a batch of bio-diesel. You have quite a few options, i had a friend whose SAE was training squirrels. It all depends on what you have available to you, the upside is working at a supermarket is almost always excepted as produce handling.

  4. when I was in high school FFA was my life!

My SAE was beef production. Its awesome! I have been keeping up my my herd still so I can get my National Farmer Degree I have My chapter and state farmer degrees.

If your looking for an SAE i would go with beef production It teaches SOOO much and is fun..
