Question:

Help with Sony Handycam DCR-HC37?!? (firewires and such)?

I want to connect my handycam to the computer and put the footage on it. I have a USB cable with a 4-pin on the other end, but it doesn't work; the computer won't even show anything when you connect it. My computer doesn't have any kind of firewire port, 6-pin or 4-pin, so I'm kinda screwed. I have to get this footage on to the computer! Please help!

Thanks

  1. If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

  2. Add a firewire 400 port (IEEE1394a, i.Link, DV - all the same thing) to your computer.

Then it won't be a problem.

You have already discovered that USB does not work.
