Question:

Help with Sweeney Todd auditions?

I am a very good actor, and a decent singer. I am confident that I can act the part of Sweeney, but the singing is another matter. I've been practicing a lot (the audition isn't until November), and I have the range, but my concern is whether or not my voice will be strong enough (i.e. able to carry) when I sing the part. Is there anything I can do to improve my volume, strength, power, etc when singing this part? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Well confident is definitely key but it sounds like you already have the confidence thing down pat. You should also use a lot of support while your singing. Singing takes the whole body so don't just use your head (although occasionally head voice works out nicer). The main tool of use should be the diaphragm. If you use it correctly your sound will be supported well and will sound powerful, which is very important for the music in Sweeney Todd,

  2. You just need to add some bass to your voice or alternatively make it rough and sing it loud. To add bass to your voice just sing it like your mimicking someone with a lower voice. A good role to practice this with is from the show Jekyll and hyde. While Jekyll's voice is alot more softer and posher, Hydes is alot deeper and less formal. It's something to think about in contrast. It may help you when practicing to remember that.
