Hi there, I will soon be moving from India to Sydney having received my immigration visa. We are a family of four (a son aged 12 and a daughter aged 6). Can someone help me with the names of a few suburbs which meet the following points...

-Suitable for families (low crime rate)

-Not too expensive (20 to 30km distance from CBD is fine)

-Direct train to CBD with travel time of about half an hour

-Catholic schools for both boys and girls in the area

-Facilities like shopping centre, clinic, restaurants in the area

Thanks

  1. Campbelltown and Macarthur -

The City via East Hills line is the quickest train to and from Sydney, by road, I think it would probably be the M5.

This area tends to cater more for families and is quieter than a lot of suburbs closer to Sydney. It's a lovely place to raise a family.

The prices for buying or renting a house is less expensive than Sydney. There are quite a lot of modern, new homes in Campbelltown as the area is expanding. The shopping is fantastic - there are always sales and bargains on good quality items.

In the summer, you can take your family to the Sydney beaches, or to the Wollongong beaches which tend to be less crowded.

There are Catholic schools including a Catholic high school for girls and another for boys. Also, Campbelltown provides After School Care and Vacation Care services as well as other children's services.

It is multi-cultural and some Indian families have settled in the area. This area has a community feel about it and I find the people there tend to be quite friendly.

The Southern Highlands region isn't too far south and have some lovely places to take the family camping, bushwalking or bike riding.

  2. Well it would be much easier if we knew how much to spend. If you come here ,please just don't hang out with the Indian community .Do yourself a favour for yourself and kids, adopt the people and their ways, not our bad ways of course and try to meet Aussies.Sorry I hate to see all the ethnic communities around Sydney. How are we ever going to be a nation when we all hide away from each other.Good luck and their is nothing wrong with public education in this country.

  3. There are a few Indian communities in Sydney. One that I know of is Homebush, an inner west suburb 15 kilometres from the CBD. I'm not too sure about the prices but if you want safe areas, they come at a cost.

There are direct train services to the CBD. Homebush is situated on the Inner West Line (purple on the map). Travel should take around half an hour.

Homebush lacks a decent shopping centre but there are a number of cultural shops and restaurants.

For Catholic schools, there are two that I know of in Ashfield, a nearby suburb. For girls, there is Bethlehem College and for boys there is De La Salle College.

I hope this helps and I wish you and your family the very best of luck in moving to Sydney.

  4. Try North Shore (if you can afford it) and Emu Plains/Leonay. The 2nd one is the one you will most likely be choosing out of those 2, travel is about 45 mins (Intercity train) to city, safe area (well it has graffiti, car hoons etc but very few beat ups, stabbings etc and the last time i heard of a murder there was about 5 years ago so they are pretty rare). Close to (5km) Penrith (with 1 stop on train and direct buses), with a 300+ shop mega-mall and huge hospital. It is about 50km from CBD.
