Question:

Help with USB flash drive?!?

I'm having trouble with my new USB drive and the computer (A dell) at work. It detects the drive and says it's working properly in the little "Safely Remove" window, but I can't figure out how to open the drive to get the file I need off of it. It worked fine at my house, but nothing new is showing up under My Computer, and I've tried everything any troubleshooting guide can show me. I may just be an idiot, but I can't figure it out!

  1. Right click my comp

    select manage

    select storage device

then chang the letter to a drive not used

  2. double click on my computer...then you will see the flash drive, double click on it...and your file should be in there.

  3. After connecting the USB drive with the computer, go to the Control Panel and open the Add Hardware wizard. It will detect the uninstalled devices you have connected to your computer and install them. If it doesn't work, go to the My Computer properties and in the hardware section open Device Manager. In the Device Manager at the top you will see your computers name with a computer icon, right click on it and then click on Scan for hardware changes. If that doesn't work too then in the Device Manager find your USB drive's name below and check its properties if it exists. May be the device is disabled. If it is, enable it. Can't help more than that. Good luck

  4. You'll probably find that the drive letter the flash drive is after is already taken up by another drive on your system.

Personally, I'd change the drive letter that the flash drive is looking for (If you know how to do that).

Otherwise, disconnect all network drives in My Computer & you'll probably see the flash drive appear.

Get your file & reconnect the network drives.  (Log-off & log back on should put them all back automatically).

    Hope it helps.

  5. You probably have a network drive mapped that the USB key wants to use such as F:, G: etc.

Windows sees the hardware, but the drive doesn't appear because it can't take over an existing drive.

Try temporarily deleting the lowest letters you have mapped. Or you could simply reassign them to other letters and then pop in the USB key again.

  6. 1st of all, never call yourself an idiot! That just makes you give up quicker. And second of all,i may be 11,but I'm smarty. You need to check up under My Documents or My Recent Documents, and if it doesn't show, your flash drive port may be broken.

  7. Try right-clicking in the empty area on My Computer and selecting refresh several times until something new shows up at the Devices with removable storage or hard disk drive section. If the flash drive doesn't open when you double click it or an error message appears, right click the icon and then click explore. This should show the contents of your flash drive. :)
