can anyone give me some advice on my back problem.

it started about 10 years ago when i was lifting my daughter out of the cot. i think i pulled a muscle in the lower part of the back and couldn't move with out pain for about a week.

over the last ten years it has gone to many time than i care to remember. the main problem is it is getter worse all the time and goes more and more and i haven't been pain free for almost 5 years.

the pain is spreading up and down the back and i can't stand up straight for more than a few seconds. i wake up every day in pain and it has got to the point where i find it hard to even put on my socks some days.

i have been to the doctors but they only want to give me pain killers which help a bit but i don't want to keep taking pills every day.

can you help.

  1. Hi.I have back problem,I thought I had pulled a nerve also. Not the case.

Get your doctor  to send you for a nuclear bone scan also an ultrasound.this will tell you the damage.ex.it could be a disk dislocated  or disk bulging., excercise or stretches daily helps, given by sports physiotherapist.   It Has Helped Me    Pain killers NO.     Step 1 quarterzone needle in your back will help.

Step 2 Surgery this would be the last solution My advise NO NO NO

You need tests result to solve your problem Take them to the physio.

    Good Luck

  2. Two suggestions. One go and see an osteopath or chiropractor and second ask your doctor to send you for an xray. I have a similar problem and an xray showed that my spine was slightly out of line. I am present doing exercises set by a physiotherapist to correct this which seems to be helping

  3. Try a chiropractic or osteopath they should be able to free up the lower back so that you can become pain free

Remedial massage is very good as the therapist will untie the knots which develop in muscles.  I had this treatment when the whole of my left side was in spasms of pain and although quite a painful treatment it is now as if nothing were ever wrong.

If none of the above suit you then I suggest acupuncture to clear the pathways of your body.

Once you have got yourself back on track I personally believe that Yoga is an extremely good form of exercise as you slowly strengthen the muscles and keep the body supple.

  4. This could be sciatica from the sound of it. You might want to ask your GP for a physio referral to see if they can help with back strengthening exercises. Explain again how debilitating this condition is, and how it affects you and your child's life, demand an appointment!!

    Good luck.

  5. You need to talk to your doctor about getting a referral to a back specialist that will show you the exercises you need to be doing to strengthen and relieve this problem.  At first, you will hurt worse, but then you will find you no longer need pain killers.

  6. As a fellow chronic pain sufferer I sympathise.

However, for practical help in your case I would strongly recommend you consult an Osteopath.

You Doctor might also arrange for an X-Ray or Ultrasound to see if there is any obvious damage.

With chronic pain it can be important not to wait too long to take the pain killer.  Too little too often results in ineffective control.  Stomp fast and hard and the chronic element of your pain may reduce.  Then so too will your overall consumption of painkillers.   I frequently need Codeine and hate the side effects.  Thankfully I have so far avoided addiction.

  7. It sounds as if it might even be what I had many years ago. We used to call it a slipped disc: a rupture of the cartilage between the vertebrae.

If you can get a quick referral to a physiotherapist or an osteopath, I'd do that and get a proper diagnosis and some physical treatment.

If not, and if you can afford it, see an osteopath or a chiropractor privately. They weren't able to give me more than temporary relief, but with careful exercise, that helped a lot while it was healing.
