Question:

Help with a button switch in a circuit, anyone?

I just bought a push button switch that momentarily presses (it doesn't click down in the off position). When pressed, it closes the circuit (light turns on). When unpressed, it opens the circuit (light turns off).

How can I reverse this? I want a light to turn on when the button is unpressed (instead of lighting when pressed).

What kind of circuit can help me achieve this?

For those of you who are curious, I'm fixing a glove compartment light switch :D

  1. first you can try by reversing the wires connection to the switch

if it doesn't help. you can use relay for this.

you have to use a relay according to your countries voltage 110 V, 230 V etc and also check for current rating.

remember the relay must be of "normally closed" type.

just connect the wires which are running through the switch from power line, to the coil portion of the relay.

then, connect the light source to the "normally closed" connectors

remember both light source and the switch  should be connected to power line by wire, so that the current would run through them.

using this, when you press the switch button, the light will off and when you leave the switch, the light will turn on.

if you want ,you can mail me I will give you the circuit diagram.

  2. The best thing to do is to go to a junk yard and get the right switch. If you can find a place that will let you take it off a wrecked car yourself, it might be pretty cheap. Otherwise go to Radio Shack and get a momentary contact normally closed pushbutton.

You can use a relay, but the relay will be using power all the time to keep the light turned off unless the circuit is off when the ignition switch is off.

  3. You can use a relay, or buy a different switch. You bought a NO switch, you need a NC (normally closed) one.
