I've had a cold sore on my upper lip for about 5 days now. I am not sexually active so we can rule out herpes or anything of the sort.

I ate really spicy Indian food the day before it turned up and I never eat that stuff so I'm guessing that's what did it.

Can anyone give me some advice to get rid of this thing.. its so ugly and annoying thanks in advance!!

  1. neosporin works wonders, as does abreva.

as for a natural remedy, i am not so sure....but perhaps google will be of better help

hope it goes away for you!!!

  2. FYI...cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus.  Type 1 tends to occur in the oral area, and Type 2 tends to occur in the genital area.  There is alot of crossover between the two because of oral s*x.

So...you CAN"T rule out herpes...you have it.  The outbreaks usually last about 10-14 days and can be brought on by stress or other infections.  There is no evidence that spicy food can trigger an outbreak that I am aware of.  There is no cure.  There are some OTC products that can give sympomatic relief.  There are of  course antiviral medications that can be prescribed by your doctor. Zovirax cream is helpful to shorten the course.  Oral antivirals aren't usually prescribed unless it is a severe outbreak.

The best thing to do is avoid poking at them. Vinegar will just sting, it won't shorten the course.

  3. if it is a real cold sore only herpes can cause it. eating food cannot cause it. sorry.  you dont need to sexually active to contract it. it can transmitted via contact.  "Herpes simplex is most easily transmitted by direct contact with a lesion or the body fluid of an infected individual. Transmission may also occur through skin-to-skin contact during periods of asymptomatic shedding. Barrier protection methods are the most reliable, but not failsafe, method of preventing transmission of herpes. Oral herpes is easily diagnosed if the patient presents with visible sores or ulcers"

  4. Yes, put some peroxide on a cotton ball and hold it on the sore for  at least 3 minutes, 4 times a day.

    .

  5. Three aspirin a day, L-Lysine three times a day, and Herpicin-L which comes in a tube like lip balm- applied liberally every time you think of it all day long. IF I feel a tingle, I begin the L-Lysine pills and aspirin regimine before I even see the first redness coming. Sometimes doing that will prevent it from coming out at all. The Herpicin-L lip balm is applied to keep it moist and to help heal. Keeping it moist prevents it from drying and cracking open. Vitamin E oil dabbed on it helps too. I open a capsule of Vitamin E that I have on hand and dip a Q-Tip into it to apply it. Vinegar will dry it, as will peroxide, but if there is a scab, you will want to keep it moist so that it doesn't crack open. Also you might consider staying away from spicy foods, coffee, pop, and (sorry) chocolate.

  6. Abreva it really does work!!

  7. I get them after spicy food or acidic food.  I've tried 2 things

hydrogen peroxide -  just saturate a q-tip and swab the cold sore, and

Abreva - or an Abreva generic salve... this works fast.

  8. clean with hot water and apply tea tree oil with a cotton bud

  9. If it's relatively small I usually pop it and clean the area with alcohol. It will dry it up right away.

  10. Its probably a Canker sore. They are not herpes. Cold sores are herpes.

I get rid of them by brushing my teeth frequently and using mouth wash. Its important to keep your mouth really clean becuase dirt is what causes them.

If it is on the outside of your mouth it is probably a cold sore which is herpes. You can get it by drinking off other peoples cups and bottles and kissing. They say over 1/3 of Americans have herpes. There are over 30 types, most are not dangerous or even noticeable.

  11. If it is a cold sore putting honey on it wil clear it up. Get honey from a bee keeper that has not been heated.
