This is due tonight (web homework) and I've tried it like 6 times, so I'd like to get outside opinions on the correct answer. Any help is great appreciated! Thanks!

Given: An acre is an area equivalent to that of a rectangle 60.5 x 80 yd long. There are 36 inches in one yard. There are 2.54 cm in one inch.

In May, 1998, forest fires in southern Mexico and Guatemala spread smoke all the way to Austin. Those fires consumed forest land at a rate of 27500 acres/week.

On the average, how many square meters of forest are burned down every minute? Answer in units of m^2/min.

  1. 1. 1 aker=4,046.8564 sq meter.

    2. 1 week=10,080 minuts

    3. 27,500*4,046.8564/10,080=11,041 sq meter/minut (rounded)

  2. 27500 acres/week = ? m^2/min

    Solution:

    1 acre = 60.5yd x 80 yd = 4840yd^2

    (36in)^2 = 1yd^2 or 1296 in^2 = 1 yd^2

    (2.54cm)^2 = 1in^2 or 6.4516 cm^2 = 1 in^2

    6.4516 cm^2 x (1m^2/(100cm)^2) = 6.4516 x 10^-4 m^2

    1 week = 1week x (7 days/1week)(24 hr/1day)(60 min/1 hr) = 10080 min

    (27500 acres/week)(4840yd^2/1acre)(1296in^2/1yd... x 10^-4m^2/1in^2)(1week/10080min)

    = 11,040.53 m^2/min   ANSWER

    Hope this helps.
