Question:

Help with a crazy dwarf hamster?

I have 2 Dwarf male hamsters, I've had them for about 2 months. When we got them they were 10 weeks old and already used to each other - since they came from the same litter. We got them a cage that they were used to and the breeder was using one exactly the same. They have started fighting about 2 weeks ago, first it was just squealing and annoying each other, then it came to the point where the slightly darker one made the other hamster bleed. It came to the final straw when the darker one nearly bit off the others ear. We now have them in their own cages (and the lighter one is doing great). The darker one has become so hard to deal with that we cant even open the cage door and put food in his dish without him freaking out and attacking our hands. It's near impossible to clean his cage and he is just the same as a wild hamster. We have tried everything to get him used to us again but nothing is working. There are days where I feel like just letting him outside and set him free,

  1. I have a friend that I visit often and she has 2 dawrf hamsters almost exactly like the one that you are describing.

Does your cage open from the top? That would be a whole lot easier to put in food. It would also make it easier to take your hamster out, my advice would be to get a cage with a top open (maybe a fish tank your not using anymore or a plastic bin also works very well). To put in food and water, distract the hamster with something on the other side of the cage, or put it in while he's sleeping.

Also, your hamster is just probably REALLY protective of his property. My guess would be that he'd calm down as soon as he's out of his territory.

To take him without touching him and getting nasty bite, you can wait until he'd on the wheel and then take the wheel out of the cage with him on it. Or, do you have an igloo in the cage for your hamster? If you do, they you can scoop the hamster onto the igloo and pick him up like that.

Dwarf hamsters can be very difficult to handle, but if you can figure out a way to take him out of the cage everyday then he might calm down some and grow to bond with you.
