Question:

Help with a hamster?

I just bought the little fellow yesterday, at a resident petco in my town. And he seemed perfectly fine there, provided I didn't get to hold him, and or see his back/under side. He bottom is covered in poo, and it's not wet. His cage has no signs of diarrhea. So I'm not completely sure this is wet tail...

There is no crust on his eyes, his eyes aren't watery, he's active, there are no signs of internal damage, no signs of any other illness that I can tell, and he's eating/drinking just fine. I was simply wondering, what is this, and if he'll be okay.

This is deeply concerning me, as well, if this is easy to cure, what should I give/treat him with?

Preferrably what are some home remedies?

Is this just the effect of them switching him over from what food the breeder had him on?

Will this spread to my other hamsters?

If so, is there any way to prevent it?

Thanks.

  2. Firstly, separate him from your other hamsters. If it is wet tail, it can be infectious and you do not want your other hamsters to get them too.

Secondly, soft p**p can also happen if you feed your hamster too many watery fruits or vegetables or change his diet suddenly. Stop feeding him watery foods and put him only on his commerical mix for a couple of days to see if the p**p becomes alright.

Keep a close watch on his p**p, if in the next few hours, it starts becoming watery or his tail area looks more wet and soiled, then you have to take him to a vet for antibiotics immediately. There are medicines like Dri Tail available in pet shops and they are not really useful for wet tail once it has started happening.

In case the p**p starts getting worse, start rehydrating him by force feeding water through a syringe till you take him to a vet since dehydration is the main problem with wet tail or diarhea.

Wet tail happens only in syrian hamsters and is a bacterial infection causing loose stools and diarhea. The p**p is watery and since it cannot come out as solid, it sticks to the hamster's tail and back.

Have you seen his solid p**p yet? If not, I think you should take him to the vet since if he has not solid p**p and has got wet back, then it is a sure sign of wet tail.

If your hamster is a dwarf, then they can also have a diarhea similar to wet tail and you have to take him to a vet too for antibiotics to cure this.

Young hamsters are more prone to wet tail especially if they have just been weaned away from their mother. If it is confirmed as wet tail, alert your pet shop too since they have to check the rest of the litter.
