A piece of wire 7.3 centimeters long weighs 86 grams. What will a 20-centimeter length of the same wire weigh? (Round to the nearest hundredth)

I did 86/7.3 = 11.78 * 20 = 235.6g

is that right? I have no clue.

  1. its correct

  2. do a proportion     7.3/86= 20/x     cross multiply, then solve

  3. Yes, you are absolutely correct.

  4. 1)

    86 g/7.3 cm

    = 11.780821917... g/cm

    ≈ 11.78 g/cm

    11.78 g/cm * 20 cm

    = 235.6 g

    = = = = = = = =

    2)

    9.8/100 x 100%

    = 980/100 %

    = 9.8%

  5. I believe that's correct.  I thought of it as units first and then try to fill in the numbers.  So by doing it that way, you start with weight and then find the weight/length ratio by dividing by the length and then multiply by the new length like this:

    (weight) * (1 / length) * (new length) = new weight

that way the units for length cancel to leave you with weight and you substitute the numbers in as you've done.  great job!

  6. perfect working!

86/7.3  finds weight of 1 cm

    11.78 * 20 = 235.6g  = weight of 20cm

  7. RIGHT.......

  8. actually, you're answer is already right...
