When formatting the (DVD -RW)disc before recording you have a choice of 'video' or 'vr'....what is the difference and which should I choose.

  1. Rolyn is correct, DVD camcorders are not good value, I personally, have 3 but the one I use most is my JVC HDD one because it is far superior to the Sony & Panasonic which are my other 2. To answer your question, Video means that once you have fomatted the disc you can only use it once. VR means that you can add more video at a later time to the disc & also delete selected files on the disc but be aware that deleting files doesn't give you back the original space on the disc.

  2. You should choose to return the camcorder for a full refund and get a miniDV tape, hard drive or flash memory based camera from Sony, Canon or Panasonic.

DVD camcorder video quality is very poor - especially when computer editing is required. And, as you are learning, the different mini discs are treated differently.

DVD-based camcorders were a good idea, but their actual implementation has bee horrible.

If you don't want to believe me, go to the Camcorders section at www.forums.cnet.com and read through the sticky and the posts. The largest number of problems and poor video quality come from DVD based camcorders... please note, pro video folks don't use them - short record time, poor quality, inconsistent media stability, difficulty archiving, short shelf-life, and problems editing.
