Question:

Help with a new born kitten?

We have a stray cat that hangs out in front of our house with our other cats, she just had a litter of two almost four months ago, we took one of the kittens in after the other one disappeared. She had another litter of possibly just one kitten within the last 24 hours. The problem with this new one is it seems to be pre-mature, and although the mother cat is staying with it, she doesn't seem to be trying to get it to feed. Should i just leave her alone? Or is there some way i can get her to feed her kitten. I really cant afford to take another cat in. Also she is a small cat herself.

  1. Stray cats have a hard time raising a kitten, never mind a whole litter. If you can catch her you should take her to be fixed so this doesn't happen again.

Do you know where she left the kitten? She may just leave it wherever it died. She's probably a very busy girl.

How is the kitten doing that you took in?

  2. You may have to bury the kitten as the mother will abandon it.

  3. mom cant get it to nurse. it either nurses, or it dies.

some times kittens are too weak to find a nipple, just find him one then touch his face to it, he will nurse. you may have to help him find a nipple for a few days.

either get mom fixed, or bring her to a shelter. many will spay her, then return her to you. let her live outside.

better then having a few hundred unwanted kittens over the next ten years.

  4. There might have been something wrong with the kitten.

What yu need to do now is get the stray cat spayed!

You can get a live trap from SPCA and then take it to the vet before it has another litter (especially if you don't want more cats)

Give her a safe place to get well after the sergery...

THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT THING!  Please do it asap!

The cat WILL NOT eat it...or burry it. most will just leave it and the ants will take care of it.

There is NO SUCH disease of "Cat Scratch Fever" either...that's a line in a song.

  5. when kittens are born, they look like drowned rats, so it might not have been born premature. also, when kittens die, the mother cat definately does NOT eat it!!! it takes it away and buries it or something. believe me, i have raised well over 70 kittens... also, if u find a cat and a newborn kitten, DO NOT pick the kitten up... the end result might be death for it. also, if u pick it up, and u have a cut, u could get Cat Scratch Fever, a sometimes deadly illness for u. for the first few days, do not pick up the newborn kitten or touch the mother (Cat Scratch Fever) and if the kitten dies, the mother will take care of it. if the kitten is indeed alive, which newborns can be decieving, do not pick it up or touch it for at least a week. well, if the kitten is alive, or if u have anymore kittens that u don't want to keep, try ur local pet shops, and then, if u are desperate, Walmart parking lot. please don't give it to any  Human societies, or pet homes, because they have the right to immediately put it down for no reason at all.

  6. Can you trap the momma cat with a humane trap?  Most homeless cat societies have one you can borrow.  Take her to get fixed - the homeless cat society can tell you where to go for reduced feral spaying or neutering.  Otherwise, she is going to keep having kittens, and those kittens will have kittens and soon you will have an entire colony.  They can get diseases including Feline HIV and Leukemia...and pass it on to YOUR cats.

If the kitten is still alive, just leave it alone for now.  Natural selection is all part of living and dying.  The mother cat may have had more than one kitten, and have just hidden it in a different spot to increase the chances at life (we had a feral momma that did that - we found 2 different nests).  If you can get to the body of the kitten, feel free to dispose of it - otherwise, she will leave it there for other animals to feed on.

  7. Oh I am so sorry to hear that.Rip little one.I am glad you helped the other litter:)She should (she will most likely eat it and if she does not you can bury it.have a good day
