Question:

Help with a "Man Cave" (lack of a better term)

My wife and I have decided to live in seperate bedrooms. (for reasons much too long to delve into) The room we had shared before she decorated. Needless to say, I've spent years in a bedroom that has pink walls, pink window treatments, pink beding, "mauve" trim (yeah, I know) pink EVERYTHING!

Now the room is mine to do with as I wish but it almost seems as if I've lost my perspective on what I would want a comfortable, relaxing space for myself to even begin to look like.(color schemes, bedding, what to put where to better make use of space etc.)

I've tried looking on the internet & all I find is websites that are either construction companies, expensive total makeover remodeling, cheesy all black/metal doorm room/teenage type stuff or paint CAD type sites, which IS helpfull but for 1) I dont know where to even begin(lost perspective remember) & 2) I have VERY little money. I cant remodel only paint, move some furniture, & buy cheap wood to build some shelves or storage or whatever.

I want to know if anyone knows a website I could go to that has pictures or some basic ideas of how "guys" decorate a bedroom. This may sound stupid or even immature (I'm 32) but I really need some help with this. I've spent YEARS in an all pink room that was completely decorated by a woman.

That would fry any guys brain.

  1. try bold colors, like bold blue (and only paint one wall that color). To save on money try going to target and buying there wood furniture products so everything is the same color. For a man's cave (lol, my bro said that word yesterday) make sure its simple. Have a simple bed spread going on.

One thing about pinky-girly rooms is that they are always too busy.

  2. i am getting a new room to and i decided to decorate mine like a hotel room that i like

  3. What colors do you like and what are your interests?

I feel for you so much on the all pink room~~~even as a girl that loves pink, I couldn't handle that room!

Blue seems like too much of a stereotype to me. At the same time, blue is supposed to be relaxing (light blue). If you decide you want say, baby blue there's a super simple way to do that. You can buy white paint and mix a few drops of blue food coloring in until you achieve your desired color. Trust me, it lasts a super long time, no worries.

I have shelves that I bought un-finished and you can buy furniture like that and either finish it or paint it to your liking. The shelves were under $10 each. As bad as this may sound, check local dollar stores or discount stores, at least for ideas. I wasn't sure what I was going to paint my bedroom until yesterday when I walked through a sale in my town and then the colors & scheme just clicked!!

Some day I'm sure I'll decorate a room to my hubby (as a rec room or music room or something), I'll use the stone look and the wood look and anything earth tone as that's what he really likes. Plus he loves music and sports, so that's why I asked for your interests. I'll check back to see if you add details.....that would help out a lot!!

    Good luck!!

  4. LOTS OF MEN!

  5. If I were you I would just head out to a few stores , like Target, Bed, Bath and Beyond ot Linens N Things to look for your bedding just look and pick out what you like, as far as furniture do the same thing , I would go with a rustic heavy wood dresser and bed! Match your paint with your bedding and just do it, as far as storage just go the Container store and they will have everything you need! remember you really can't go wrong it's all about what you like, go grab yourself some decorating magazines and just look and get ideas from there! Good luck and have fun!

  6. After pink you need some WHITE therapy. Do your walls and trim all white. Its hard to paint over pink so use a good base coat!

Once you have a white room you will see more clearly. Literally and figuratively! Then you can go, as the other answer said, shopping and find bedding you like and things will fall into place from there. Don't try to do it all at once. Wait until you have an "aha" moment and see something you really like.

Keep searching on the web for ideas. type "bedroom design" in google and then click on the image search button.

Take a look at your possessions,  focus more on how to stock and store and what you want displayed (souvenir from school or a concert or old vinyl recors, anything you really like) that might give you an idea of what you like or a color basis to start from.
