Help with a really tough computer virus?

I think my newly built computer was just infected with a nasty virus, so i ran avg and cleaned off most of it, at least i thought so. Now i get messages saying application error windows could not find C:/system32/rundlll32.exe. Also my C: Drive and my other internal harddrive D: are both hidden. I can access them by typing C: or D: in the run command box. Also if i try to open a program, say itunes for instance, the "open with" dialogue box comes up. I am very thankful in advance for any solutions to resolve this problem.

  1. You could alyways try finding a .dll file repair program on the internet, and see if that repairs the problem. The otehr related problems look like it was simply due to the removal to rundll32.exe.

Seeing what you have said, the virus is more than likely gone from your system, and the antivirus program had to delete the file since it could not be repaired. If you are able to open up AVG, it might possibly have a back-up copy of the rundll32 and you could just repair it, scan it, and if it still comes up infected, just when it enters the virus hold, see if you can repair/wipe the file to its original state. If not, and all else fails, A system restore 2-3 days before the infection should remove the virus and more than likely repair the removed files.

If the System restore doesn't open up in explorer.exe, just reboot your computer and open it up while in the reboot menu (XP default key is F11 i believe, not sure on Vista)

  2. The easiest way (Not always possible, depending on the virus) is to use your system restore to back your computer up to before the virus was on your computer.  It worked for me when I had a particularily hard-core virus.  Good luck and God speed.

  3. try to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and do a full scan. it's free and download glary utilities its free

  4. www.majorgeek.com, anti-virus menu, look for avast home edition its free, download from one of the authors, run setup, when finish avast will scan your hard drive on next restart, if anything is found it will give you a numeric option list hit the number 2 to delete all corrupted files, then download Spybot search & destroy, from anti-spyware option and zone alarm home edition from firewall option, its all free and works good.

  5. This sounds like the main system root area is damage / currupt. what you need to do is open run and type in sfc/purnnow then press ok, then open run again and type in sfc /scannow.  It will ask for the windows disk if it finds errors / issues.  If this doesnt help you or you need more help then check this site out http://www.nicklockard.com
