A stone drops down a well and takes 1.7 seconds to reach the bottom. How fast is it going when it hits the water?

Assuming no friction at all.

  1. You can't work it out unless you have the depth of the well


  2. the speed is given by

    v=gt+v0   v0=0 here

    so v=gt=9.81*1.7=16.68m/s

  3. v=u+gt

    u=0

    v = 9.8 * 1.7

    v = 16.66 m/s

  4. Depending on the length, and if there are no aerodynamics envolved, it will be traveling around 30-36 miles per hour. Also it depends on the rate of velocity, which that is determined by the mass.
