Question:

Help with an African Violet. Experts please help!?

I have two of them one small and one large. I have them in a window facing south so that they get a little sun during the day and more during the evening. I do not get water on the leaves because I know they hate that. My problem is that they wont bloom. What am I doing wrong? I previously had them in a window facing west so that they got evening sun only. Is there something I need to be doing? I even planted them in the African violet soil and use the African violet food and miracle grow. Please let me know if there is something else I should be doing or using.

Thank you in advance.

  1. Try moving it to a brighter window. Sometimes certain verities just need more light. But try to avoid direct light or the leaves may burn. I usually keep violets in west and east facing windows. If you violet has been in the same pot or soil for a while, repotting can help. If it looks like there is more than one African violet in the pot, it probably has babies growing off it. If you take them off the plant may be flower. African violets bloom best when they are rootbound. The pot should be one third the diameter of the plant. For example, if your plant measures 12 inches across, it should be in a 4-inch pot.

Violets are long day plants and bloom best when given 8-12 hours of sunlight.

    Hope I helped.
