vos meus darling es decorus

vestri music pulsatus meus animus

it's supposed to say

"you my darling are beautiful,

your music touches my soul"

but im not sure what order it's supposed to be in, because I know certain languages have a different order when it comes to subject and verbs and what-not. It's a quote to go on a painting for a close friend.

  1. you are my beautiful Darling

    your music encourage my impulse

  2. I've got to second what Ying said - those sites are horrible! Doesn't having a 'translation' with the English word 'darling' right in the middle arouse some suspicion?

Mi mellite pulcher cantus tua animum meum tangunt. = My beautiful darling, your music touches my soul.

The Romans would not have included the 'are' part. They typically omitted forms of 'to be' when the meaning is obvious. 'Musica' is the art of music; music actually performed is 'cantus'. Latin had several words for 'soul'. 'Animus (accusative animum)' is 'soul' in the sense of the emotional faculty.

  3. I don't know Latin, but if you go to www.intertran.com there is a great translator there, where you just plug in the words or phrase.

  4. Tu, amans meus, decorus/pulcher es

    Musica tua animam meam tangit

Use the familiar forms of you and your, adjectives usually follow nouns, "my soul" (animam meam) is in the accusative case because it is the direct object of "touches," and verbs are at the end of a sentence most of the time.

There may be more poetic words and phrasing to express this thought but this is at least more grammatically accurate.

  5. No, no, no, no, don't use any of those awful automated translation services, they can't help you for s----.

Now, if this person is a female, you would say:

    tu, care mē, es pulchra

    musica tua meum animam continet

Word order in latin is almost completely mutable within a sentence, since the endings of words are inflected to show their grammatical role.

EDIT: you people who say that what she has is right, or that she should use an internet tool to translate, ought to be ashamed of yourselves and your ignorance.

EDIT NO. 2: Okay, if it's a male it's something like this:

    tu, care mē, es pulchrus

    musica tua meum animam continet

  6. It's actually correct, I think.
