Question:

Help with baby stuffy nose

My daughter is 3 months about to be 4months, and last night she kept waking up having a hard time breathing cause her little nose was all stuffy. I could hear all her boogers, I used the nasal aspirator but it only did so much. Then she was crying because she hates that thing. Besides Saline...

When she was really small I would run the hot water and let it get steamy in the bathroom to losen her boogers so I could get them out easily, but now she wont stay still anymore. As soon as she sees the aspirator coming she moves her head from back and forth. Its most likely a cold or because her tooth is starting to come in the the left side of her mouth.

what are any techniques you use for your baby?

  1. mine hates it all too.  When he's having a fit and we happen to notice he's got boogers that are still wet we can use the aspirator.  It helps because he does have the work but other than that he hates it so when I hear that he's got them up there I just put a couple of drops of saline in and leave it.  soon their gone on their own.  either he sneezes them out when I don't see where they've gone to or they've become wet and loose enough for him to swallow.  Gross?  yes but that's life right?

  2. I agree. Warm bath, cool mist humidifier with Vicks and elevate the baby's crib a little.

By the way, rather than elevating the mattress itself it's easier to put a couple of thin books under two of the crib legs instead.

  3. You could try running a vaporizer in her room to keep the nasal passages moist and looser so the mucus can be removed or expelled.  You can also try raising the head of her crib mattress a couple inches to keep her head higher than her body (do it under the mattress and make sure there are still no places where she can get an arm or leg stuck).

When my kids got big enough to try to get away from the nasal syringe, I'd lay them on the floor looking at someone or something by their feet, then kneel with their head between my knees to keep them from seeing me coming and anticipating, and hold them still for the 5 seconds it took to clear both sides real quick -- they still got mad about it, but at least I could get most of the stuff out!

  4. As far as using the aspirator...we have the same problem...he sees it coming and freaks out. I've started nursing our son while my husband sneaks in and squeezes his nose out. Our son is almost 11 months old and doesn't pay attention to his nose being handled because he's content nursing. You might try feeding her while you do it. Also...a damp warm washcloth over the nose always helps loosen things up for my son. Best of luck!

  5. BUY A COOL MIST HUMIDIFIER WITH VICKS.. GIVE WARM BATH AND BULB SYRING BABIES NOSE BEFORE BED..PUT SOMETHING UNDER THE MATTRESS TO ELEVATE BABIES HEAD.. THE VICKS WORKS LIKE A CHARM

  6. I use the hot shower method.  Get the bathroom real steamy and let her sit in there.  Another way is to actually get her in the shower with you (as warm as she can take it to make it steamy) and rinse her in the spray.  As bad as it sounds, make sure to get her face wet.  She will blow out her nose and have it all run down her face so be ready to wipe her face. (she will cry, but it will also help loosen everything up)

I have used the vicks plug-in with both of my kids.  Make sure you have it in a larger room b/c it STINKS, but helps

  7. Maybe try a humidifier and if you think she might have a cold, infant tylenol always helps my little man. And he likes the taste so he takes it willingly. Good luck!

  8. My daughter had this as well. Her doctor told me not to use the nasal aspirator too much (just once or twice a day) because if used too often, it can bruise the insides of their nose, and cause more mucus to form making the nasal congestion a never ending cycle.

She's doing much better now, so this worked for me.

  9. Blow into her mouth. Be prepared with washcloth (your cheek will be covered w/booger goo).

  10. I bought some baby nasal drops from asda chemist and they seem to do the trick most of the time.

If not though, boil the kettle and put in a spoonful of vicks and put it in her room before bed for a couple of hours. It could also be dry heat making her nose snuffly you know, try using a humidifier or a portable air conditioning unit.
