I set up my car insurance for Direct Debit payments but they tried to take the payments on the wrong day, so cancelled my policy, can I renew with another company and still use my no claims total of four years?

  1. This is difficult, i believe some insurers can re-instate policies, but only after a very short period. If your policy has been fully cancelled, then the bad news is that you should revert back to what level you had at your last renewal.

If this was 4 years - then the difference between this and 5 years no claims bonus shouldn't be massive. I know that probably isn't what you wanted to hear!

    I hope it works out.

  2. Yes but if you cancel you will still have to pay the years premiums

  3. When you say that they tried to take payments on the wrong day, did they try to take them on a day contrary to that agreed or on the day agreed but you just didn't have the money in your account? Insurance companies do not cancel your insurance after one incident of non payment. It obviously happened more than once. Irrespective of whether you go to another company or not, you may still owe money to the insurer for the cancelled policy if they were unable to take payment and they have the right to withold your no claims bonus until it has been paid.

  4. Thats tough, you are going to have to sit down with an udnerwriter and figure all that out.  I have some links to good resources and companies on my insurance blogs.

  5. Yes but if you cancel you will still have to pay the years premiums so why not go back and ask them what to do.

  6. You may have an issue, because you now have a break in coverage.  You need to get with the company that messedd up the direct payments and get them to correct it and keep you in continuous coverage.
