To help cut monthly cost, I am considering buying a bike to ride to and from work ( I live within 5 miles of work) I would greatly appreciate any give advice on how to choose a bike ( frame size I am 5 10, types of shifters and brakes, etc) and some of the better makes. The budget I have set for a bike is $250.00 for a new bike.

I rather buy a used bike in hopes of getting a better bike at a better price, so suggestions on used bikes would also be a help

  2. get a giant ocr3 or a fuji team. try ebay for good deals on those. you are correct, get a used good brand instead of getting a crappy brand new bike

the size should be 50 cm-54 cm or a size medium

  3. You will probably fit a 55cm frame. Of course this depends on the bikes geometry and you body so you should have your local bike shop personally fit you. If you want the best speed and efficiency go with a road bike, if you are going to be taking a trail or jumping curbs along the way, get a mountain bike. Just about any bike will do as long as is doesn't come from walmart, although their prices are tempting. But before you drop money on a bike, ask yourself if you are actually GOING to ride. I know countless people who buy bikes with the greatest intentions, but never ride them.

  4. If you want a fast bike i would suggust a mountain bike to get to work faster. If you are learning to ride a bike or just dont want to go fast just pick a bike with gears.

  5. you could buy a hybrid....it is a cross between a road bike(racing bike, thin tires) and a mountain bike.

I have a road bike I use on trails, and a hybrid for just riding.

a mountain bike or hybrid, can stand the bumps on a road.

as far as size....go to a bike shop and get the standover height.

mine is 50 inches......it will depend on when you "stand over" a bike. a "fitted" bike is soooo much more comfortable to ride.

most bike shops are glad to help out and most have excellent used/trade in bikes for sale.

giant and specialized are two names I can come up with now.. oh , and trek. my hybrid is a trek.....

you can spend thousands on a bike......mine was about 300.00......but I got a softer seat, they adjusted the handle bars, etc etc.

good luck to you......the most important thing though//

    WEAR A HELMET

and get a rear view mirror that attacts to the helmet.....get something bright to wear so the traffic sees you........
