Question:

Help with choosing a hotel?

My friend is having her wedding at the El Dorado Royale (in between Cancun and Playa del Carmen). That hotel is too pricey for me. I've been searching for a hotel in that area more in my price range (no more than $200 per night). The problem is there are too many to choose from. It would be just me and my boyfried (late twenties). I don't want a place crawling with kids but an adults only resort is not necessary. Also, I'm also on the fence with either staying at an all inclusive or staying some place on the beach in PDC. Does anyone have any advice. I've looked on trip advisor now I would like some first hand experience. Thanks in advance for your help

  1. It might be cheaper to take a cab to Puerto Morales (there are inexpensive rooms there and it's between Cancun and PDC)or from there a bus  to PDC. The transportation out of the   Cancun Airport is a bit of a scam a they have a way of making you use their transport, which isn't so cheap. But outside, where the vans load up is a wall separating tourists from the front of the airport where all the cheap public transportation is). follow the wall and walk around th the front if you want, or inquire at the airport about transportation to PDC  or the closest bus. Beware of the people trying to push timeshares on you, they're relentless. You'll want to arrive in plenty of time to get accomodations. In PDC, I stayed at a relatively inexpensive place called the POSADA...it was situated about halfway down the main  drag away from the cozumel ferry. It's a yellow 2-3 story place on the right.

  2. I'm in Acapulco so my advice is this. Just ask the cab drivers at the airport. They will be more than happy to listen to what it is you want and will take you to a few and do the bargaining with the hotel desk on the price. they know all the little mom and pop that are cheap and most are great. Leave your bags in the cab and motor running and check out the hotel.

Have a sense of adventure and you'll be surprised. No need to book expensive and maybe disappointing all inclusive rip off hotels.

Most Taxi drivers will get a kickback for bringing in customers. The guys know where the best are and will bend over backward to assist.

  3. Trip Advisor IS first hand experience, chica! It just depends on the type of vacation you like. There's something for everone, from posh rooms with swimming pools and A/C to thatched huts with shared eco-bathrooms to all inclusive resorts... depends on your preferences!

You could also have a look at www.intheroo.com or www.locogringo.com (both are local info websites). I live in the RM so don't have first hand experience of hotels (except in Tulum where my visitors have all stayed - some fabulous places on the beach there but I guess you don't wanna be that far south, huh?)

    Enjoy! :)
