what are the chemicals in indoor/outdoor paint that are bad for the environment?

  1. Each paint typically has a proprietary mixture of solvents and solids.  The solvents are what is called the Volatile Organic Content (VOC).

    The VOC can be as common as Stoddard Solvent or as complex as Dipropylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether.

    The problem with the VOC is that they evaporate into the air and there they combine with other pollutants.  One example is PAN, or peroxyacetyl nitrate, that can irritate the eyes and throat, as well as damage plants.

    Most house paints now are water based and have very low or no VOC.  This is in response to regulations banning the use of oil based paints except where absolutely needed.


  2. I dont know names, but i always go for  minimal VOC contents  0-29 , as this is low-odour and doesnt choke you half to death for weeks on end. and is better for the environment
