I've been taking L-Lysine for about 2 weeks now and although I saw a difference in the number of cold sores I still get them (probably like once a week). Any thing else I should be doing to prevent them?

  1. Cold sores are caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox in children.  The virus never actually leaves your body--you just develop somewhat of an immunity to it.  The cold sores occur when the virus is reasserting itself.  This can be when you are stressed, run down or have poor nutrition so taking care of yourself is the first priority.  Abreva is a product that can help diminish cold sores, and the drug Valtrex can also help with them.  Other alternatives include Blistex and Carmex which help promote healing.  Getting proper nutrition and plenty of rest will also help.

  2. swish milk of magnesia in your mouth because they form when your mouths too acidic. milk of magnesia is a base so it should neutralize it

  3. Stress is a major cause of cold sores.  In my opinion, probably the biggest.  Get Zovirax, and keep it handy for when you feel a tingle on your lip.  Apply it before you go to sleep if you feel a cold sore might be coming.

Other than that, perhaps daily Valtrex (for extreme cases) is appropriate.

  4. I don't understand how you get cold sores once a week.  A real cold sore takes a week or two to completely disappear.  I agree with everyone else's answers and the only two things I can think of to add are 1)  you can ice your lip when you feel a tingle.  this will make an outbreak less severe and 2) place teabags on your lip.

  5. Sorry - not that I know of. Valtrex is over the counter, but taken orally once you feel onset. Isnt taken continously. All I know is decrease the stress - if you get them alot. Its viral so Im not sure how much outside influences come into play in prevention.  But once a breakout, dont touch!
