Question:

Help with college major!

I'm going to be a senior in high school this coming school year, and I need help deciding what I should make my major. I'm planning on going into the medical field, most likely some type of surgery. I've heard many people major in biology or chemistry before going to medical school. Is this a good plan or should I major in premedicine? That seems like the obvious choice, but I don't know. Will a major in biology or chemistry prepare me for the MCAT? This website ( http://www.collegeboard.com/csearch/majors_careers/profiles/majors/51.1102.html ) makes it seem like premed isn't really a major. The article talks about choosing bio. or chem. majors. I'm confused on the process...just help me please...lol :P

  1. Pre-medicine is not a major.  It's a series of courses, including biology, chemistry, and physics, but no upper-level requirements.  Many people major in bio or chem because there's overlap with the pre-med courses, but just as many will major in something unrelated and get into med school anyway.

  2. I'm a third year Chem major thinking about possibly being pre-med.  Biology and chemistry are great paths to take if you want to study medicine.  I'd suppose being a pre-med would be better with maybe a minor in something like biology.  I'd ask a college professor about the MCATs.  I'm sure you'd get some use from a variety of science fields to help you pass the exam.
