Question:

Help with converting testosterone values?

Is it possible to convert nmol/l to ng/dL? If so, can you walk me through it? Thanks!

What I'm looking at is a test which can detect testosterone in the 0-35 nmol/l range and normal values are listed as 280 to 1080 ng/dL for men and less than 70 ng/dL for women.

  1. 1 mol testosterone = 288.43 g/mol

    1 nmol testosterone = 288.43 ng/nmol

    1x10^-9 g (1 ng) = 3.47 x 10^-3 nmol (1/288.43 ng/nmol = 3.47x10^-3 nmol))

    1 dL = 0.100 L

    280 - 1080 ng/dL = 2800 - 10800 ng/L

    2800 ng/L x 3.47x10^-3 nmol/ng = 9.716 nmol/L

    10800 ng/L x 3.47x10^-3 nmol/ng = 37.476 nmol/L

    ng/dL x 3.47x10^-2 = nmol/L

    nmol/L / 3.47x10^-2 =ng/dL

    1 nmol/dL = 2.88x10^-7g / 0.10 L = 2.88x10^-6 g/L

    280 ng/dL = 2800 ng/L = 2800/288.43 g/mol = 2.91 nmol/L

  2. High pressure liquid chromatography is an  analytical method that can detect very low levels of testosterone.
