Question:

Help with dancing! 10 Points!?

I am 15. I love musical theater. I sing and act very well. But the thing holding me back is my dancing. I have a really hard time learning and remembering the choerography. This is a huge problem in the theater because you typically have about one day to learn a 16 measure dance. Once I learn the moves, I am a pretty good dancer, it's just the initial learning that I struggle with. I am surrounded by girls who pick up the choerography as soon as the instructor shows it to us. I want to be able to do that eventually. I am in dance classes but they don't seem to be helping much. Has anyone else been in this situation??? If so or if not, please help and tell me what I can do to improve the time it takes for me to learn the choerography! Thank you!

  1. probably pay attention dat mite help mayb just a lil bit

  2. watch choerograghy in music videos and practice everyday. watch your instructor closley and dont pay attention to how well other girls are doing better than you. act like its just you and the instructor. or talk to your intructor for advice and ask if you can stay after for extra help.

  3. Try to associate each move with a word, and then learn the words like you would a song.  Example:

    Right, Right, Duck, Sweep

    Turn, look, arms, turn

All you have to do is come up with a special word for each move, something just for you that you'll remember.  That way, you can even go over the words (song) in your head like when you're eating lunch or something.  And then you'll remember the sequence of moves!

    Good luck!

  4. Well I've never been in dance but my suggestion is either ask the dancers that pick it up for help and/or try out different dance classes that may be easier for you to pick up dances in.

  5. write down the moves and then do it over and over and over again that way you remember the dance

  6. Just get through the singing that is more important than dancing.  If you have the vocals they will help improve your steps because people want to hear the music.  Take Peter Pan for instance majority of audience just went to hear Julie Andrews sing, not fly around the stage.

  7. practice, if you dont get better take a class, if you dont improve whatsoever! you are naturaly horrible! i am sorry, but it would show that its just not your gift! but take tap and jazz classes, and character classes at a local dance studio or company

  8. I dont know if your allowed to do this in class but:

    Write notes down

              OR

Video tape it and plug it in later and get it memorized

    Hope i helped=)

  9. try to take more than one class so you just used to dancing

    OR!

turn music on and just dance

    then turn it off

    wait a minute

    turn the music back on

and try to do the sam thing you did before

    challenge you brain a lil

  10. GET OVER IT

  11. with some people, it just takes longer. its ok. i would suggest taking a pen and paper and writing the choreography in a way you'll remember. then you can practice on your own with the right choreography. if your able, tape the class and choreography, then you can see what you need to improve on at the same time as learing it. remember, practice doesnt make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. if you write it down, that helps me and i remember it easily. also, listening to the music over and over helps me link the moves to the music. and get the timing right. hope i helped. good luck!

  12. hey im 15 as well and i act and dance but my major is choreography.... it used to be hard for me to learn other peoples choreo but then i started to think of it as a monologue.... u memorize ur lines right? RIGHT! so try to memorize ur routine go over and over and over it any chance u get dont be afraid to ask questions either b4 or after class or something. practice ur routine while ur brushing ur teeth or walking in the halls practice in ur mind practice practice practice... this may sound stupid but if u think about ur routine in ur head right b4 u fall asleep ur more likely to remember it better.... let me kno if i was any help

  13. just keep taking classes regularly and you'll get better i promise. i used to have that problem when i started dancing too. i'd have to see the choreography a few times and i'd have to have it explained slowly. now i can pick it up a lot faster. i still can't just see it and do it but it doesn't take as long as it used to. so just keep taking your classes and practice all the time and i'm sure you'll get better :)

    best of luck!

  14. Practice, practice, practice. Every chance you get. The girls on my team always forget the routine because they don't practice on their private time.  Practice with another girl in the class or team or whatever. Have her come over or get together.

  15. You probably already put a lot of effort into it so the best I can tell you is to practice and persist. When your classes are over, go in your room and practice, ask your teacher to go over the choreography with you, video tape it so you can watch it at home, ask friends to watch you do it and give you advice on how to improve etc. I know it is very demanding but if your goal is to be a part of musical theater, then I guess it is needed =) Good luck and if you practice, things can only get better!
