This is my third year playing as a setter (and my 1st in high school), and i really want to learn how to do the different sets such as quick sets, back sets, etc., but my coach is too busy to take away time from coaching the whole team. Can anyone give me any tips on different setting techniques?

  1. ok, so by quick sets im assuming a shoot? where u just push the ball straight out and the oh is in the air while u hit him with the set... so bascially you want to approach every set the same way, left foot alittle more foward and take it in front of your face. ok from there just give it less arch and give it more power so when u push with everything do it all faster and stronger but not too strong, its all practice. back set or for the opp. they tell you to not arch your back because it gives away what you're going to set so its almost the same as every other set except your alittle more under the ball

and just set the ball but as you do flip your thumbs up more towards the red and just follow through in the direction with your arms.  quick middles are jus wrists, just get under and tap the ball, or if you jump set middles then just stop the ball above the net. yea freshmen level dont really run 1's who knows. depends on your team but you are a freshmen as you said so the coach wont really teach you much just work on consistency and start practicing varsity level sets for the outside not freshmen level sets. (diff. is that freshman and jv level sets usually land in the court and arch above the antenna, varsity and college level land around 1 ft outside the court and are alittle more off the net and dont go above the antenna, its faster so the block isnt set up as quickly.) yea good luck man. hope this helped.

  2. Hi,

Wow, you must be pretty good if you've been setter for three years! I'm sorry that I've never heard of a quick set, but i can help you out with the other set techniques.

    -Back set

for a back set, position yourself directly under the ball instead of slightly behind it like a normal set. Push through the ball as normal, but instead of pushing the ball up, let it roll slightly off your finger tips. The ball should go straight up and slightly behind you.

-What i call a dig set

This set is when you go for a dig, but you realize its going to smack you in the face. [Misscalcuation] Position your hands as if you going to set, but instead your hands being above you, have themat forehead level. Push up and through the ball as hard as you can,as you don't want to make it a 'net ball'

Hope i helped! And I wish you sooo much luck

  3. If you set the high outside, your follow through is high and long.  (I usually pick out an overhead object to aim at.)

If you set the 31 set or shoot set toward the outside, your follow through will be lower.  (I usually aim at the top of the antenna.)

If you set the quick set for the middle, you still follow through but not as much.  And the follow through is almost straight up.

If you set the back set, you follow through will be long, but behind you as much as you can.
