Help with dodgy phone calls.?

Question

Today someone called my mothers house asking for me saying I had won a competition. You cant phone my mothers house and withhold your number, so my mother pressed 1471 to retrieve the persons number. The number was 02074309440. I tried to call it off my mobile and it said the number was not recognised, I thought she had given me the wrong number and so I told her to press 1471 then 3 to call it back and again it said the number was not recognised! How is this possible to call off an unrecognisable number? I called bt and they dont know who it was either. How is this possible?

The company is called mychild, www.mychild.co.uk, dont know what they do though, the phone number for them is 08452591418, apparently loads of people have had these calls.

Please do not phone them back, they usually give you a phone-number and when you phone back they charge you at premium rates. It is just a scam. Ignore it.:)

You know, I had this problem also.  Except it annoyed me so badly that finally the thing I started doing was when they would call.  I would say "Hello", and they would say is Donna home, and I would say, "Just a minute".  Then set the phone down for awhile.  They eventually stop calling.  LOL.  Not to be rude about this, but if you tell them that you as another person were to say, she/he passed away about a month ago, they will 9 times out of 10 take you off their list.  Good Luck to ya.

These are usually just call centres cold calling people so that you call them back at preimium rates. I wouldn't bother about it.

Maybe the number can only make outgoing calls.

Probably best you leave it anyway, as it's 99% sure to be a scam. You don't get nuffink for nuffink in this world.

Just want to say thanks to Donna M - this is a brilliant way of dealing with cold calls - I'm plagued with them normally, but with the pipeline between Italy and North Africa down, the Indian calls centres have gone quiet.  It's going to take them 2 weeks to repair it - bliss.

Have you entered any competitions? I got a phone call saying id won a holiday for two weeks all expenses paid, i knew i had not entered any comps so i let the man carry on talking until he asked for details about me and i just laughed and said goodbye, if i had entered any comps they would have already had my details.. its a con and don't tell them your bank details or your address or postcode as they could try to steal your identity.

Call centre giving you a load of bull.  Won a competition - I dont think so!

I have a large whistle that is used in football matches, I keep it by the phone.

Any nuisance calls get a sharp blast of it. They never ring again.
