Question:

Help with driver swing?

Hello,

I am crushing my irons but I cannot hit a good driver. My 6 iron goes about 160-175 straight or with a slight draw, but my driver shots have a terrible slice most of the time and travel about 135-145. Other times, I shank it hard left where the ball travels 20 feet on the ground. HOw should I swing my driver (and hybrids)? I play the ball slightly inside my left foot, and I try sweeping the club but something isnt working.

I know I should take lessons, and I will, but for now I am looking for some quick tips and insight. Thank you.

  1. you should be making the same swing that u do with the 6iron. just change the ball position and of course you'll be farther from the ball cuz its a longer club. just make a nice smooth swing like u were swinging any other club.

  2. i found that i do much better driving when i go slow - not fast! my best drives are with 4i & 5i

  3. it may be ur driver has ultra flex or strong flex and u have a very fast club spend and it bend alot and by the time ur grip is already going up but ur club is flexed so that the head us reaching the ball late or you backswing maybe too fast or ur over swinging good luck

  4. It seems that the length of the Driver is what gives people difficulty sometimes.  Try choking up on the grip to shorten the length of the shaft and to give you more feel for what the club head is doing during the swing.  When my driver's not working I choke up on the grip about 2-3 inches and it helps.

Another tip is to tee up 2 balls side by side(touching each other). Hit both balls at once...This makes you follow thru with your shot and if done correctly, both balls will fly straight down the range.

  5. You are probably trying to crush the driver too much.  Slow down and make the same swing you do with the 6 iron, that might help.  Also is your driver shaft the same stiffness as your irons?  Obviously you can control a six iron nicely, how about the 5, 4, and 3 iron.  You should make pretty much the same swing with all clubs, it is the set up that changes more than anything else.  You position the ball further back in your stance the shorter the club to hit down on it, whereas the driver is up near the left heel to hit slightly up on it.

  6. Swinging a hybrid is just like swinging an iron. Your driver on the other hand is different. A driver swing tends to be a larger arc to generate more club head speed. From what it sounds like, you are trying to crush the golf ball with your driver. In doing so your body is getting ahead of your hands, and you are out of sync. Swing the driver at about 80% and make a smooth swing. Your best bet is to see a club pro for lessons so he or she can see your swing and help you.

  7. low and slow.  Make a good hip turn.  try to neutralize the hands on takeaway, and focus on a good solid follow through.

    That should help.
