Question:

Help with ethernet connection on Sony laptop?

My roommate has a Sony Vaio (the new one) and I have a macbook. In our dorms we have to use an ethernet connection to get internet. When I hook mine up, I can browse right away. When she hooks up her ethernet she gets an error when she tries to browse the internet.

I'm only a *little* bit tech savvy, and that's on a mac. I'll add details if you need them.

  1. What is the error? Some schools (like mine) require a program that acts like a virus scan; macs don't need this because they don't have viruses, but windows based PC's (like Sony Vaio's) may require a program from the school to use the ethernet.  Try talking to your RA for details on a program like this.

  2. Wat is exact error message that appears.... are u using cable or wireless?

  3. I had a similar problem.... This is how I fixed mine:

    1) Go down to the lower right hand corner and right click your wireless/network connection (the two computers). And select Network and Sharing Center.

    2) Now select on the left hand column Manage network connections.

    3) Now, you should have one connection that does not have a red X on it, most likely your first network under LAN or High-Speed Internet. Right click this connection and select properties...

    4) Now select the network tab (default). Now under The connection uses the following items: click Internet Protocol Version 4 and select properties.

    5) Now, here is most likely where your problem is change the IP to Obtain an Ip address automatically and DNS to Obtain DNS server address automatically.

    6) If these settings are already correct, then go back to the network properties and right click under Internet Protocol Version 6 and once again make sure that the IP and DNS are being obtained automatically.

    7) Then select OK, (check both V4, and V6). And now open internet explorer or firefox.

    Hope this helps!

  4. What's the error message?

Every computer should be ready to hook up to the internet over ethernet.

It could be and I.P. address problem.
