Help with factoring polynomials.?

in the method where you use the equation ax^2+bx+c the a b and c being numbers. in the equation x^2+5x+4 the way to solve it is to factor 5x down into to numbers. do you have to make sure that the factors of 5 add up to 4 or the factors of 4 add to 5?

    you have to find what factors of 4 will get you to the number represented by the second number which is 5 here

    factors of are 1,2,4  2*2 or 1*4 and here it would be 1*4

    (x+1)(x+4)   x^2 +x+4x+4=X^2 +5x+4  2*2= w0uld only produce 4x
