Question:

Help with fin rot on my platy?

I have a platy that has fin rot. It started with a white spot on her tail. I tried to remove her last week and medicate her. I when I put her back in the tank she bent her body and swam around like that, so thought I hurt her. I decided to watch and see if it gets better. So today I went ahead and treated the whole tank. It said to add the medicine daily for 7 days(melafix). I always clean my tank on Sundays, but it said to do a water change after the 7 days. I have a 14 gallon tank with 5 platies and a otto. So today I cleaned the gravel with my net. Upon cleaning with my net I noticed that I have at least 4-5 babies. Will this medicine hurt the babies? I added a bunch of plants for them to hide. I'm trying to decide what to do about the fin rot. I know removing her from the tank stresses her.

  1. HI I AM A FISH EXPERT, GO TO UR LOCAL FISH STORE AND ASK FOR A MEDICINE TO STOP FIN ROT, ITS EASILY TREATED =]

    GOOD LUCK

  2. My beta has the same thing! I thought it was ick at first, but it wasn't. anyway, I called my Fish store (they are experts when it comes to fish) today after school, and he said it is probably a bacterial problem. I'm sure if you have a fish store (NOT LIKE WALMART) ask them what medicine is best and i'm sure they will have some really good advice for you. :)

If you added the medication today, it might take a few days. The meds might run you 6 bucks, but either that or a new fish....
